Track Library and Component Usage with Design System Analytics

Who can use this feature?

πŸ‘€ Any Organization Member can view Design System Analytics. They can only see data of Libraries they have access to.

Within an Organization, you can share a Library in a Team. Or, across your entire Organization.

Design System Analytics allow you to track Library and Component usage within your Organization.

You can use Design System Analytics to:

  • Find out which Components in a Library are popular
  • Identify Components that are detached often
  • See which Components in a Library members aren't using
  • Compare adoption between two Libraries
  • See which Teams are using each Library
  • Find examples of Components so you can see how their used and supplement documentation

Note: We only include Libraries a member has access to in their results. You will not be able to track Component usage within another member's Drafts.

View an Overview of all Libraries

Any member of an Organization can view Design System Analytics in the Library tab of the Admin Console.

Tip! Click the Library heading in your Organization to open the Library tab in the Admin Console.

This gives you an overview of All Libraries within your Organization.

Underneath the Search bar, we show an overview of Teams and Libraries in the Organization.

This includes Libraries shared within Teams, and across the Organization. Learn more about Team Libraries in an Organization

We highlight the following analytics:

  • Total Teams

    The total number of Teams in the Organization. This includes Open, Closed and Secret Teams.

  • Teams with Libraries

    How many Teams in the Organization are using shared Libraries.

  • Total Libraries

    Total number of Libraries in an Organization. This includes Libraries shared across the entire Organization, or within a specific Team.

  • Total Components

    The total number of Master Components in an Organization's Libraries.

  • Total Styles

    The total number of Styles in an Organization's Libraries.

We then list every Library within the Organization, grouped by Team. For each Library you can view:

  • # of Components: The total number of Master Components in that Library.
  • # of Styles: The total number of Styles in that Library.
  • Used by: The number of Teams using this Library.
  • Inserts Last Week: The number of times a Component from this library was inserted into a File. This is limited to the last week.

You can view detailed analytics for each Library and explore Component usage. Click on the Library in the list to view its analytics.

Tip! Design System Analytics are updated around every hour or so.

View Analytics for an Individual Library

Click on a Library to view more detailed Analytics.

Overview

  1. Switch between Overview and Library Analytics views
  2. Enable the Library for all Files in the Organization

    This adds it to the Enabled Libraries section of each File within the Organization.

    • Access Components from this Library in the Assets Tab in any File.
    • Access Styles from the relevant section of the Properties Panel in any File.
  3. View an Overview of some key Design System Analytics
    • Teams using this library

      The number of Teams that have used Styles and Components from this Library

    • Total Components

      The total number of Master Components in that Library

    • Total Styles

      The total number of Styles in that Library

    • Activity this week

      The total number of times people have inserted Components from this Library in to Files

  4. View All Styles in the Library

    We show every Style included in the Library. This includes:

    • Color Styles (supported on Fill, Stroke, and Background)
    • Text Styles
    • Effect Styles
    • Layout Grid Styles

    You can hover over each Style to view the name.

  5. View All Components in the Library

    We show a thumbnail for every Component in the Library. We group Components based on name and File/Page/Frame structure.

Library Analytics

Click on Library Analytics to view detailed analytics on how Members of your Organization use Components.

Note: We only include Components in these Library Analytics. We do not currently include Styles.

  1. Select a Duration

    Select a date range you would like to view these analytics for. You can choose from:

    • Last 30 Days
    • Last 60 Days
    • Last 90 Days
    • Last Year

    We started tracking Library Analytics September 28th, 2019. Data for dates before this will not be available.

  2. View a Graph of Component Insertions

    This graph shows the total insertions for this library, for the selected Duration. Figma plots the graph to the end of the current week.

    • Current data is blue
    • Unavailable data is grey
    • Dashed line shows this week's current usage (incomplete)
    • Hover over the dot to view the date and total number of Component Insertions

    You can also compare performance between Libraries. Learn more in the Compare Analytics between Libraries section.

  3. Top Three Teams

    View which Teams are using this Library. This includes:

    • The top three Teams by # of Component Insertions.
    • What percentage of total Component Insertions each Team contributes
    • How many other Teams are using this Library

    You can download a CSV of which Teams are using this library. Click the Download a CSV button. Learn more in our Download a CSV of Design System Analytics section.

  4. All Components Analytics

    View analytics for each Component in the Library. This includes a:

    • Thumbnail of the Component
    • Component Name
    • Inserts
    • Detaches

    Inserts and Detaches are for the Duration you set above e.g. Last 30 Days.

    If you want to dive deeper into a specific Component's usage, click on the Component in the list. This allows you to see which Teams use that Component, and the individual Files it's a part of.

Track Component Usage

Component Analytics allow you to see how specific Components are being used.

  1. In the All Components Analytics section, click on a Component:
  2. At the top of the page we will display some information about the Component:
    • Component Description

      The description that has been recorded for a Component. You can add a description for a Component in the right sidebar.

    • Total

      The total number of Instances of this Component that currently exist

    • Used by

      The number of Teams that have used, or are currently using, this Component.

    • Used in

      The number of Files that Instances of this Component exist in.

  3. We then list of all the Files that the Component has been used in during reporting period. We only show Files that the users has access to.
    • Click on the File name to open in a New Tab
    • View the Team the File is part of
    • View how many Instances of that Component exist
    • View the date the File was Last modified

Note: We will only show Files here that you have access to. This includes Files from your Drafts, Teams that you are a member of, and Open Teams in the Organization.

Compare Analytics between Libraries

You can also compare Analytics between two Libraries.

  • Track adoption of a new Library (e.g. Legacy vs New design system)
  • Compare how Libraries are used across different operating systems
  • Measure work between Products or Brands

  1. Open the Admin Console and view the Library tab.
  2. Click on one of the Libraries you want to compare.
  3. Open the Library Analytics.
  4. Above the graph, click the field next to Compare insertions to and select the second Library from the list.
  5. Figma will plot the graph for both Libraries
    • Data for the original Library is in blue
    • Data for the second Library is in black
    • Unavailable data is grey
    • Dashed line shows this week's current usage (incomplete)
  6. Hover over a dot to view the date and total number of Component Insertions.

Download a CSV of Team Usage

You can download a CSV of Component usage, for the selected duration. This allows you to see which Teams are using a particular Library.

The download includes the following analytics:

  • Team ID: The ID Figma uses to identify the Team behind the scenes
  • Team Name: The Name of the Team as it appears in your Organization
  • Insertions: The Total number of Component Insertions made in each Team
  • Insertion %: A Team's percentage of total Component Insertions. Use this to see how Teams contribute to Component Insertions.
  1. Open the Admin Console and view the Library tab.
  2. Select the Library you would like to view and click on Library Analytics heading.
  3. Click the Download a CSV link to download the CSV. This is an instant download.

Glossary of Terms

Component Insertions / Inserts

Any time someone adds an Instance of a Component to a File. We record the following actions as Insertions:

  • Copying and Pasting a Component Instance
  • Duplicating a Component Instance
  • Dragging a Component from the Assets Panel

The following actions aren't counted as Component Insertions

  • Components that are nested within another Component. We'll only count when the top-level Component is inserted by itself.
  • Components Figma creates when you duplicate an existing File

Component Detaches / Detaches

Any time someone uses the Detach Instance function on an Instance. This breaks the connection to the Master Component and allows you to make changes to the underlying layers. Learn more about how to Detach Components.

Last Modified

The last time a collaborator modified the File. This includes any interaction with objects on the canvas, or leaving a comment.

[Last] Week

Refers to the a calendar week, not the "last 7 days". The end of the week will depend on your geographical location. e.g. North America considers Saturday the last day of the week vs Europe where Sunday is the last day of the week.
