Transfer ownership of a file
Before you start
Who can use this feature
Users on Any Figma plan
Only the current Owner of a file can transfer ownership to another collaborator.
You can transfer files within teams or within files in your Drafts folder
When you create a file, Figma will make you the Owner of that file.
You can transfer ownership of the file to another collaborator. This could be someone on your team, or an external collaborator, if you're working in your Drafts.
When you transfer ownership of a file, Figma will:
- Transfer ownership of the file to the new owner.
- Keep the file in its existing location. This applies to files created in your Drafts folder.
- Not adjust your access permissions on the current file, or prevent you from viewing the file.
Note: You can also transfer ownership of an entire team. This will transfer any projects or files you owned to the new owner. Learn how to change the Owner of a team.
Files in Drafts
Warning: When you delete your Figma account, Figma will also delete any files in your Drafts, regardless of the file owner.
If you are planning on deleting your Figma account, we recommend moving any files in your Drafts to a team project. You can then transfer ownership of that team or project to another Figma user.
Alternatively, you can export files in your Drafts as .fig files. This will allow you to open those files in Figma at a later date.
Exported .fig files don't include any permissions, comments, or version history from the original file.
If you have a file in your Drafts, you can transfer ownership of that file to another collaborator. This will only transfer who the owner is, it won't move the file from its location in your Drafts.
- Open the share modal for the file.
- File Browser: Right-click on the file and select Share.
- Editor: Click the Share button in the toolbar.
- Find the person you would like to transfer ownership to. Click the arrow next to the collaborator's current permissions and select Owner from the options.
- Click the Transfer ownership button to confirm the transfer. You can't undo this action.
Files in teams

- Open the share modal for that file
- File Browser: Right-click on the file and select Share from the options.
- Editor: Click the Share button in the toolbar.
- Find the person you would like to transfer ownership to. Click the arrow next to their current permissions and select Owner from the options:
