Replace text content with AI
Note: Figma’s AI features are currently free while in beta, but usage limits may apply. When made generally available, we’ll update you on pricing.
With Figma AI, you can generate and populate realistic text in your designs. This allows you to save time populating placeholder content for repetitive elements like lists, posts, cards, and tables.
How it works
Rewrite this: lets you generate content from scratch in a text layer, or make changes to existing text, using a custom prompt.
Replace content: uses text context from the first element in a series of duplicated elements to populate content in the remaining elements. In order to replace content:
- Each element should have the same structure as one another
- Repeated elements must be contained in an auto layout frame
- We recommend a maximum layer nesting of five levels for the elements being duplicated
Get started
To replace content, you’ll first need an element that is used repeatedly in your design:
- Create a design with text in it (or add an instance), like a card, row in a table, or social media post. You can use Rewrite this to generate content for a text layer from scratch using a prompt.
- Duplicate the element at least once.
- Place them in an auto layout frame.
At this point, you’ll see a handle under the containing frame and be given the option to Replace content in the Actions menu.
Tip: Once you’re done replacing content, you can ungroup the items in the stack to remove auto layout.
Replace content
The Replace content action uses the text content from the first element in a stack of repeating elements to generate content for the rest.
You can access Replace content from the canvas or from the Actions menu.
Note: You can’t use Replace Content to generate placeholder images for content. To generate images using Figma AI, use Make Image instead.
Extend an existing design on the canvas
- Select an auto layout frame that contains repeating elements.
- A handle will display in the bottom of the container if applicable.
- To add Click and drag the handle down to add more items with generated content.
- Click and drag the handle up to remove items.
Tip: Drag the handle under the container to create more duplicates with their own auto-generated content.
Replace content using the actions menu
- Select an auto layout frame that contains repeating elements.
- From the Actions menu, click Replace content.
Make changes
Once you’ve replaced content in a design, you’ll have the option to make changes to the new content. Use the prompt field to tell Figma AI what to change.
