Make an image with AI
Note: Figma’s AI features are currently free while in beta, but usage limits may apply. When made generally available, we’ll update you on pricing.
With Figma AI, you can create and edit images right on your canvas. This helps to make images to add to your designs, as well as remove the background from any existing image.
Make images
Use a custom text prompt with Figma AI to make images. You can fill an existing frame or shape on your canvas, or make an image in a new shape.
There are two ways to make an image with Figma AI:
Actions menu
- To fill an existing layer, select a layer you want add an image to. To make a new image layer, click on an empty part of the canvas to clear your selection.
- Open the Actions menu and select Make an image.
- Enter a prompt in the text field. Try to include as much context as possible.
- Click Make it or press Return / Enter.
Fill tool
- Select or create the shape in the canvas that will contain the image.
- Click on the Fill swatch in the right sidebar. This will open the color picker.
- Click on the Fill mode and select Image from the options.
- Click Swap image > Generate new.
- Enter a prompt in the text field with as much context as possible.
- Click Make it or press Return / Enter. The image will be added to your shape as a fill.
Figma AI will make four images for you to choose from. If none of the images are what you need, click Make changes to try another prompt.
Remove background
You can use Figma AI to remove the background from any image. This comes in handy when layering an image over a design. To remove the background from an image:
- Select the layer with the image you want to edit.
- Click Actions in the toolbar.
- Select Remove background.
From here, you can place the image anywhere in your design.
