In July 2026, Figma introduced a new foundation for Figma Make files that supports a broader range of front-end frameworks and codebases. Now you can use any web framework, including popular ones like Vue and Angular. The new foundation updates Make files to store their code in a Git repository, which enables upcoming features announced at Config 2026 such as two-way GitHub sync.
To take advantage of the enhanced foundation, older Figma Make files must be upgraded. The upgrade is a back-end improvement and has no impact to the content of your Make file, which will continue to function normally. The upgrade will let you take advantage of new interfaces and functionality in your older Make files, such as the Figma Design-style properties panel and draw mode, as they become available.
You can upgrade older Figma Make files whenever you're ready. In late October, the upgrade will become required. At that time, you'll be able to preview your older Figma Make file but you won’t be able to make any edits until you upgrade.
Note: Figma Make files created after mid-August already use the improved back-end and don't need to be upgraded.
Upgrade your file
You upgrade your files in the context of Figma Make.
To upgrade your Figma Make file:
- Open the Figma Make file that you want to upgrade.

Above the prompt box, click Update. The Update Make file modal appears.
Note: If you don't see the Update button above the prompt box, the file already has the new foundation.
- Click Update now.

Wait for the upgrade to finish. For most Make files, the upgrade takes about 30 seconds. For Make files with many older versions, the upgrade may take as long as 10 minutes.
Tip: You can close your Make file while it's being upgraded. The process will continue uninterrupted.
- If your Make file was published, republish the file following the upgrade. This applies to Make files published as templates, to the Figma Community, or to the web.
Once your Make file is upgraded, you'll be able to take advantage of the full set of editing tools in Figma Make and use additional web frameworks in your Make's codebase.

Can I edit my file while it's upgrading?
No. While your file is upgrading, you can't change versions or use the prompt box or editing tools.
I'm remixing a Make from the Figma Community or using a template. Do I need to upgrade it?
Only if the creator hasn't upgraded and republished the source Make file. If you're prompted to update the file, you follow the same process described in this article.
What happens if an error occurs during the upgrade?
While unusual, if an error occurs following the upgrade process, a Fix for free button will appear above the prompt box. Click Fix for free to start Figma Make fixing the errors. You won’t be charged AI credits for this process.
