Figma Organizations go beyond the team setup you may be used to in a Professional team. Instead of a single workspace for a team, you have a dedicated "Organization space".
Everything in the Organization space is owned by the organization. This includes files from individual's Drafts and every team within the organization.
There are two levels of permissions in a Figma Organization, team permissions and organization permissions.
Team permissions work the same way as they do in a Starter, Education, or Professional team. You'll likely be a member of multiple teams in the organization, you can have different permissions on each team.
Everyone who interacts with an organization will also have an account type and a role.
A person's account type defines how much of the organization they can access. A person's role defines If they can get edit access to teams, projects, or files. It also determines if they're included in the organization's billing
You can create as many teams as you need within an organization. Choose to map teams to your company's hierarchy, or create cross-functional teams for company-wide projects.
Control how other members of the organization can find and access teams with Organization Access. There are three levels of organization access: open, closed, and secret.
Teams in organizations also have access to extra features, like Design System Analytics, which allows you to track component usage across teams in your organization.
Organization Admins can manage every aspect of the Organization in the organization's Admin Settings. They can adjust members, view teams, monitor activity, manage billing, and configure security settings.
Figma Organization also gives you greater control over shared resources, like plugins, fonts, and organization-wide libraries.
Organization Admins do not have admin access to every team in the Organization. You can only perform admin actions on teams if you are a Team Admin.
Organization Admins can view a list of open and closed teams in the Organization. From here they can claim ownership of empty teams, and perform limited bulk actions.
As members can join many teams, Figma bills organizations as a whole. Anyone with can edit access to a team, project, or file outside their drafts is included in the organization's billing.
Figma Organization gives you greater control over shared resources, including plugins, fonts, and organization-wide libraries.

There are some things that organization admins can do:
View a list of open and closed teams in the organization.
Claim ownership of teams in the organization that don't currently have an owner.
View teams in the organization

This allows them to perform bulk actions or reassign ownership of teams without owners.
From the file browser, click Admin settings in the left sidebar.
Select Teams at the top of the screen.

Organization admins can manage members and guests in the organization's Admin settings.
Open Figma in the file browser.
Select Admin settings in the sidebar.
Select Members at the top of the screen.

Last active: The last time they performed an action in Figma. For example: moving or renaming a file, publishing a library, etc. This is not their last login date.
Use the Request CSV button to Figma will send a CSV file to the admin's email address, which lists all members in the organization. This includes more member data including job title, date added, and teams. If you have configured SCIM, Figma will also include SCIM member data in the export. View activity and access
At the top of the modal view a summary for that member, this includes their profile picture, name, and email address, as well as their current access within the organization.
There are two tabs in this modal:
1
Recent activity
View a snapshot of a member's activity to determine whether they need edit access to the organization.
View the last five events in the member's history. Figma will show the date, description of the activity or event, the team thee activity is related to, and the IP address of the user.
View the date and reason of their upgrade of any new or recently upgraded editors.
🚧 Caution: This feature is part of a phased rollout. If you don't see this tab in your Figma account then it's coming soon!
If you view the recent activity for a guest of the organization, you can switch to the Guest access tab to see what resources they have access to.
View a list of the teams, projects, and files they can access in the organization.
See their current permissions across every resource.
Update their access or remove them from the organization.
Invite members
There are a few ways to add members and guests to your organization.
Note: Anyone with an external email address will be a guest, there is no way to make someone with an external email address a member. This includes external contractors or people using their personal email address.
Any member or guest can invite someone to a resource. People can only invite others with permissions at or below their own permission level: viewers can invite other viewers; editors can invite viewers or editors.
You can only add members to the organization itself, if domain capture is off. If domain capture is off, organization admins can add members directly to the organization.
Note: Figma will give everyone you invite via this process a provisional viewer role. You can update their access to viewer restricted or editor once Figma shows them in the Members tab.
Click on the Admin settings option beneath the organization nam in the sidebar.
Select the Members tab and click the Invite member button in the top-right corner.
Enter the member's company email address and click Send Invite.
Note: You won't see the option to invite a member in your Admin settings if domain capture is on. You will need to invite the member to a resource in the organization, like a team or file.
If your organization uses SAML SSO, you can also add them to your identity provider to add them to your Figma Organization.
Upgrade a member to an editor to allow them to edit resources in the organization. Figma will include them as an editor seat in your next billing true-up.
Remove members to immediately revoke their access from the organization. This prevents them from accessing any teams, files, projects, or libraries in the organization.
There are a few steps to take when removing a member or guest from an organization.
Transfer teams, files and projects
We recommend you transfer ownership of a member's teams, files and projects, before you remove them. This allows you to select the new owner of those resources.
If you don't, Figma will transfer ownership to a team Admin or an Editor on a file or project.
Anything within the organization space is the organization's intellectual property, this includes member drafts.
When you remove a member from an organization, Figma moves any files from the member's drafts to the Shared Projects folder.
This locks files and projects for any collaborators with access to them. Admins will need to assign new owners to those resources before collaborators can continue to edit them.
Open Figma in the file browser and select Shared projects in the sidebar.
Find the member's drafts you want to manage. It will look something like Name's (email@address.com) Deleted Drafts
You'll need to move the folder to a team before you can access the files within it. Click on the folder name and select Add to favorites from the options.
Figma will add the project to the sidebar. Click and hold on the folder in the file browser and drag it to a new team.
Team: Select a team to view activity within that specific team.
Tip! Admins can also view recent activity for a specific member or guest in the Members tab. If they click to see more activity, Figma will open the Activity tab with that person's email address already populated.
Export activity logs
You can export a copy of your activity logs, which includes all the data in your activity logs. This is great if you want to back up this information or dig further into events.
When you request a CSV export, Figma will ignore any filters you've applied and export your entire activity log for the selected date range.
Enter a start and end date to see results for a specific date range.
Click Request CSV in the top-right corner of the screen.
There are a few different dates we reference in the CSV file:
Last active: The date and time the user was last active in Figma. This is not specific to edit actions and includes activity in the file browser.
Last edit: The date and time the user last took an edit action on a Figma file in the organization space. This includes files in a user's drafts.
Last seen: The date and time the user last visited a Figma link.
Activity log events
Figma will record the following information, for every event that is added to the Activity Log. Figma records and logs events for a maximum of 365 days.
Date and time the event occurred. All times are shown in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
IP address of the related user
User's actor Id. For example: John Appleseed or Figma Support

If they're included in the Organization's billing
There are three roles:
Viewer is a provisional role that removes barriers to collaboration. Viewers can view and comment on resources in the organization. Viewers can also upgrade themselves when they perform any of the upgrade actions.
Viewer Restricted is a role that can only perform limited actions within an Organization. They can't upgrade themselves, so they will need an Organization Admin to upgrade their access.
Editor is a role for members with can edit access to at least one team, project or file. They can't edit all resources in the organization, just the ones they have edit access to. Figma only includes Editors in the organization's billing.
There are a few ways members and guests can be assigned roles:
If you upgrade to Figma Organization from a Professional team, anyone with an existing Editor role on any teams or files will be made an Editor in the organization.
When you add people to your organization, via domain capture or manual invitation, Figma will give them a provisional Viewer role. Organization Admins can update a member's role after adding them to the organization.
Note: You can have any combination of account type and role in an organization. That includes Guests who are Editors, or Organization Admins with Viewer Restricted access.
Tip! Figma allows Organization Admins to view and manage new Editors via quarterly true-ups. Admins can restrict a member's access to remove them from the Organization's billing. Learn how to manage billing in an organization →
Upgrade from Viewer
Viewer is a provisional role, which mean Figma doesn't place any restrictions on upgrading. Anyone with a Viewer role can upgrade to an Editor role by performing any of the following actions:
Share a file from their Drafts with another member of the Organization. This needs to be from their Drafts in the Organization space.
Click the Edit file button when they open an edit link for a file.
Create a new team or new project in the organization space.
Request to join a closed team as an Editor. A team Admin will need to accept their request.
Join a team that doesn't have any existing Editors.
Other Editors in a team can also upgrade Viewers by inviting them to teams or files as Editors. This also applies when updating a collaborator's permissions from Can view to Can edit.
Upgrade from Viewer Restricted
Note: Organization Admins are the only ones who can upgrade anyone with a Viewer Restricted role to an Editor.
Figma will give anyone with a Viewer Restricted role the opportunity to request an upgrade, if they attempt the following actions:
Share a file from their Drafts with another member of the organization. This needs to be from their Drafts in the Organization space.
Click the Edit file button when they open an edit link for a file.
Create a new team or new project in the organization space.
Request to join a closed team as an Editor. A team Admin will need to accept their request.
Join a team that doesn't have any existing Editors.
An Organization Admin will need to approve their request before they can gain edit access.
Request an upgrade
If you have a Viewer Restricted role, you can request to upgrade to an Editor role. You can submit an upgrade request via your account settings, or from a restricted access message.
View your role and account type
View your role and account type in your account Settings.
Note: Upgrading your organization permissions won't give you edit access to every team or resource in the organization, just the resources you currently have or will have can edit access to.
Open Figma in the file browser.
Click on your name in your global settings to open your account.
Select the Settings tab and scroll down to the Organizations section.
View the name of the organization, your role, and your account type.
Click the Request Upgrade link next to your role.
Request upgrade
From the Request upgrade modal:
Use the checkboxes to choose which admin(s) you'd like to send your requests to.
Add a message to explain why you are requesting the upgrade.
Click the Request upgrade button.
Figma will send an email to the admin(s) you selected.
Figma will notify you of the admin's response via in-app notification. If an admin accepts your request, you'll be upgraded to an Editor. If they deny your request, your role won't change.
Contact Organization Admins If you don't agree with an Admin's decision, we recommend reaching out to your manager or an Organization Admin.
Figma will include the email address of the Admin who declined your request in the notification. You can use this to reach out to them directly via email.
You can also find other Admins in your organization from your organization page in the file browser. Figma will list Admins on the right side of the page.
Only a Team Admin or the Team Owner can claim ownership of a project.
If there is no longer an owner of a project, the Team Owner or a Team Admin can join the project as the owner.
This applies to:
Projects shared with the entire Team without an Owner
Private projects without an Owner
View-only projects without an Owner
Claim ownership of a Project
Note: If the Team also has no Owner, an Organization Admin can claim ownership of the Team. This allows them to manage aspects of the Team, including the ownership of abandoned Projects.
