Who can use this feature
Supported on any team or plan
Only the current owner of a team can transfer ownership to another team member.
The person who originally created the team is listed as the owner. If you are leaving the team, or want to hand that responsibility to someone else, you can transfer ownership of the team.
Only the current owner can transfer the ownership of the team to another member. They can transfer ownership to any existing team member, including a member with a free seat or can view
access to the team.
Caution: This process only changes the ownership of the team. On the Professional plan, it won't update the billing details for the team's subscription. If you also pay for the subscription, you will need to update the billing details for your team, before you transfer ownership.
- From the file browser, navigate to the team where you'd like to transfer ownership. On Starter and Professional plans, you can do this by clicking All projects in the left sidebar.
- On the team page, click the down arrow next to the team name and select View members.
- Click the relevant person's existing Team permission and change it to Owner.
- Figma will ask you to confirm the ownership transfer. It's not possible to undo this action, but the new owner can transfer ownership again. Click Transfer ownership to confirm.
- Figma will make that member the owner and give you an admin role on the team instead.
Note: Figma won't remove you from the team when you transfer ownership. You will stay on the team as a team admin. If you'd like, you can leave the team, or another admin can remove you.
If the original team owner has left the company, there are a couple of ways you can update ownership:
-
Option 1: Recover the original owner’s account
- If your IT team can forward emails from the original owner’s email address, you may be able to reset their password and log in. Once signed in, you can transfer ownership to your own account or another team member, and then leave the team.
-
Option 2: Create a new team
- If no one has access to the original owner’s account, an admin on the team can cancel the current subscription and allow it to expire.
- If there are no admins left, contact Figma support with the last 4 digits and expiration date of the credit card used, along with the date and amount of the most recent payment. Our team can remove the card on file to prevent renewals.
- After the subscription is canceled, you can create a new team, upgrade it to a paid plan, and move the original team’s projects into the new team.
