Who can use this feature
Available on all plans
On Organization and Enterprise plans, team owners and admins can remove team members or change their access
On Starter and Professional plans, plan admins can remove members or change their access
When someone leaves your company, or no longer needs access to your work, you can remove them. Removing someone takes away their access to the files and folders they could reach through your team or plan.
Note: Organization and Enterprise plans consist of multiple teams. On Organization and Enterprise plans, removing someone from a team doesn't remove them from your organization. To do that, see Remove people from an organization.
What happens when you remove someone
Anything the person owns becomes ownerless. Ownerless files and folders keep working normally, and everyone who already had access to them keeps it.
- Folders owned by the team member: The folder becomes ownerless. The folder and files in it are still accessible by members and guests. Team owners and/or admins can claim ownership of ownerless folders.
-
Files owned in teams or folders: The file becomes ownerless. There's no way to give a file a new owner, but you can give users who need control
can editaccess instead, which gives them the same control the file owner had. -
Files in drafts:
- Starter plan: Files in drafts are deleted. To recover these draft files, upgrade to a paid plan to access Unassigned drafts.
- All paid plans: Files in drafts are moved to the Unassigned drafts tab of your Admin > Content page. Admins can move unassigned drafts to a different folder.
Note: On paid plans, admins can change permissions on files, folders, and teams in the plan. This can help if someone is locked out of a file or folder.
Before you remove someone
On Organization and Enterprise plans, each team has one owner. If the person you want to remove is the current team owner, they need to transfer ownership of the team to another member first. Until they do, the Remove option isn't available for them.
On Starter and Professional plans, there's no team owner role, so you can remove any member without transferring anything first.
Tip: If someone is leaving your company, remove them from the team or plan before they delete their Figma account. Removing them first clears their role from shared files, so those files aren't deleted along with their account. If they're deleting their own account, ask them to leave the team or plan first.
