Before we get started, let's cover some terminology we'll be using in this article:
Account: Your account is how you access Figma. You can register an account with an email address and password, or via one of our Single Sign On methods (SSO). You can manage any global settings in your account, as well as any teams you're a member of. An account can only be associated with one email at a time.
Team: Teams give you access to a dedicated workspace where you can create files and projects. You can use teams to collaborate with others, or to structure and organize your own work. There are three types of teams available in Figma.
Subscription: Your subscription is how you pay for Figma. You will only need a subscription if you are signed up for one of Figma's paid plans. You can choose between a monthly or annual subscription. Subscriptions auto-renew, but you can cancel at any time.
Plan: You will select a plan as part of your subscription. Your plan lets us know how much to charge you each month. Figma currently has two paid plans: a Professional team or a Figma Organization.
Billing: There are a few ways we use the term billing:
- To explain the general process of collecting and managing payments for a subscription.
- To explain aspects of your subscription, like your billing details, billing date, or billing contact.
- Within Figma, we use the label Billing to identify areas of your account where you can view and manage your subscription, billing details, and invoices.
Note: All invoices in Figma are in $USD. Invoices are currently only payable in $USD. References to totals and balances in the product and any documentation are in $USD.

Teams
Teams give you access to a dedicated workspace where you can create files and projects. You can use teams to collaborate with others, or to structure and organize your own work.
There are three different types of teams available. The best team for you will depend on your context, and what features or functionality you need.
You can create or join multiple team within your Figma account. Figma will manage the subscriptions for each team separately.
Starter team
Starter teams are good for:
⚡ Organizing files within projects
⚡ Working on personal projects or share within small groups
⚡ Getting a feel for collaboration in Figma
Features
You can invite as many Viewers, and create as many files as you need.
Starter teams have a few limitations:
We don't impose any limitations around the kind of work you can create in a Starter team. You can use Starter teams for personal or business purposes.
Subscription
Starter teams are free, so you won't need a subscription to create one.

Education team
Education teams are good for:
⚡ Both students and educators
⚡ Anyone in a classroom environment
⚡ Institutions dedicated to learning, skill-development, and/or research
Features
Education teams allow you to access to all of the functionality of a Professional team:
Members of Education teams are also eligible to join Figma's Education Community groups. Visit figma.com/education to learn more.
Subscription
Education teams allow you to access all the functionality of a Professional team, for free. This allows students and educators in any structured learning environment to collaborate.
Any Editors on an Education team must verify their email address and Education status before they can start collaborating. It's not possible to have a mix of paid Professional and free Education members in a team.
To create a free Education team, you will need to Verify your Education status. Learn more about our criteria for Education teams.
Professional team
Professional teams are good for:
⚡ Teams with a number of designers or contributors
⚡ Creating and sharing design systems within a team
⚡ Companies that are designing for multiple products
Features
Professional teams allow you to access:
Subscription
Figma bases a team's subscription on how many Editors or Admins there are on the team. Viewers aren't included in a team's subscription, so you can add as many as you need.
Figma will bill the entire team together as a single payment. You can only pay for your Figma subscription by credit card (via Stripe).
Due to volume, we cannot process contracts, forms or purchase orders for Professional teams. View Figma's pricing for Professional teams →
Caution: You'll only have access to paid features on teams you have upgraded. If you are an Editor on one Professional team, this won't give you access to paid features in your other teams.
When you upgrade to a Professional team, your subscription is tied to that specific team, not to your Figma account as a whole. This allows you to have other free and paid teams in your account.
Figma Organization
Figma Organizations are good for:
⚡ Companies that need advanced access and administration controls
⚡ Large companies that need to share resources across multiple teams
⚡ Multi-nationals with distributed teams
A Figma Organization goes beyond the team setup we described above. Instead of a single workspace for a team, you have a dedicated "Organization space".
Everything in the Organization space is owned by the Organization. This includes files from individual's Drafts and every team within the Organization.
Alongside the Organization space, you will have a personal space. The personal space is where you'll find your Starter, Eduction or Professional teams that aren't in the Organization.
For most members, their Figma account will be linked to a company email address. Collaborators without company emails can still join specific resources in the Organization as Guests. This is perfect for external contractors.
Members can create as many teams as they need in an Organization. Any team you create in the Organization space will have access to the features of a Professional team, as well as some extras.
As members can join many teams, Organization subscriptions are billed as a whole. Anyone with can edit access to a team, project, or file outside their drafts is included in the Organization's billing.
Features
In addition to the features available in a Professional team, Figma Organizations also have:
Subscription
Unlike Professional teams, Figma bills Organizations as a whole. This allows members to contribute to more than one team, while making sure you only pay for each member once.
Organizations are billed on an annual subscription. Figma bases your Annual Subscription on the total number of Editors - or seats - that you need.
We expect that the total number of Editors may change throughout the Billing period. You can pay for any extra seats you need via the quarterly true-up process.
