We’ve made a few changes to how drafts work in Figma over the past few years. Here’s a brief overview:
- Before October 15, 2024: On the Starter and Professional plans, drafts were not associated with any specific team. You had a separate Drafts tab in the file browser that contained all your drafts, across all teams.
- October 15, 2024 through October 9, 2025: Drafts were moved into teams, and each team has their own Drafts space. Any drafts that were previously in the separate Drafts space were moved into a new temporary space called Drafts to move. From Drafts to move, you were prompted to move your drafts into an existing team’s draft space.
- Starting October 9, 2025: The Drafts to move tab will no longer be available. Any files still remaining there will be automatically moved into the Drafts section of a team on your account. Going forward, all drafts will live within a specific team.
What to expect
- You can continue working in drafts for free. Each team you’re a member of has its own Drafts section.
- Drafts in Drafts to move that you hadn’t moved manually will be relocated. Figma will automatically migrate them into the Drafts space of a team on your account.
- If there isn't an appropriate team to move them into, Figma will create a new, free Starter team for your drafts.
- You still own and control these files. Drafts remain private to you and anyone you choose to share them with.
- Some collaborator permissions may change. In most cases, collaborators will be set to
can view
, but you can change editing permissions if needed.
Frequently asked questions
We want to improve clarity and consistency across Figma. Previously, drafts existed outside of any team, which made ownership unclear and created friction when trying to collaborate or manage files. By associating drafts with specific teams, it’s easier to find, manage, and share your files securely.
These changes will go into effect starting on October 9, 2025, and will roll out over a few weeks.
If you didn’t move them manually before migration, Figma will move them for you. You can find them in the Drafts section of:
- Your existing Starter team — if you only own one Starter team at the time of migration.
- A new, free Starter team — created for you and marked with a “New” badge, if you had multiple teams or no teams.
- Your Drafts space in your organization — if you’re part of a domain-captured organization with external collaboration controls (ECC) or using Figma for Government.
If you're unsure where they went, check your Recents tab or use search.
If you didn’t already have a team to house your drafts, we will create a free Starter team for you. This team functions just like any other Starter team. You can move your drafts into a project to collaborate or keep them in Drafts for personal work.
To move a draft from one of your teams to another:
- In the file browser, find the file you want to move.
- Right click the file thumbnail and select Move file…
- Select the All tab to see a list of all your teams.
- Select a team, then select either that team’s Drafts space or a project.
- Click Move.
When you transfer a team, all its projects and files will move to the recipient’s organization.
When accepting the transfer, the recipient can choose whether to keep or remove access for everyone from the sending team or organization. The admin of the receiving plan must approve the transfer.
There are three steps to transfer a team:
You can choose to transfer the project from the new Starter team to another paid plan on your account. Typically, transferring a project requires a paid plan. If this migration creates an additional Starter team for you, we’re making an exception to allow you to preserve and organize your work as you see fit.
When you transfer a project, all its files will move to the recipient’s team or organization.
When accepting the transfer, the admin of the receiving plan is required to accept the transfer. The recipient can choose whether to keep or remove access for everyone from the sending team or organization.

If a Starter team has the Locked label, it means the team has exceeded the limits of the plan. To understand why, navigate to the team with the label and click the banner at the top of the page. You’ll see advice for how to unlock the team.
