There are additional charges in my Figma bill
What are you seeing in your Figma bill?
My bill is higher than expected
What happened?
If you’re seeing additional paid seats in your Figma bill than you planned for, there are a few common causes:
New people joined your team or organization
If new members joined the team or organization, and were given full seats on Figma Design, FigJam, or Dev Mode, they will be included in your next invoice.
A viewer upgraded themselves to a full seat
If you’re being charged for more paid seats in Figma than planned, it’s usually due to someone upgrading themselves to a full seat on Figma Design or FigJam.
In Figma, you’ll only pay for users with a full seat on your plan. However, users with a viewer seat can upgrade themselves to a full seat by performing an edit action within a file.
This commonly involves a viewer being invited to edit a Figma Design or FigJam file. When they access the file and take an edit action, they upgrade themselves to a paid seat.
Someone created a FigJam board
If a viewer created a FigJam board in a team space, or shared a FigJam draft with collaborators, they would have upgraded themselves to a full seat on FigJam.
How to fix it
Regardless of the reason, you can review your Figma Design, FigJam, and Dev Mode seats at any time during your billing cycle.
If you want to restrict someone's access, you can downgrade them to a free Viewer-restricted seat. This will remove them from your future invoices, unless an admin explicitly upgrades them again.
- From the file browser, click Admin in the sidebar.
- Select the People tab.
- From the dropdown menu next to someone’s Design or FigJam seat, change the seat type to Viewer-restricted.
- From the file browser, click Admin in the sidebar.
- Select the People tab.
- For any given member, you can change their Figma design, Dev Mode, or FigJam seat from Full to Viewer-restricted.
How to prevent this from happening in the future
Change the default seat type
You can prevent users from upgrading themselves to paid seats by changing the default seat type to Viewer-restricted. Viewer-restricted seats will always require admin approval before an upgrade.
Note: On the Enterprise and Organization plans, only organization admins can adjust this setting. On the Professional plan, team admins or owners can set default seat types.
- From the file browser, click Admin in the left sidebar.
- Select the Settings tab.
- In the Login and provisioning section, select the Default seat type setting.
- Select default seat types for both Figma Design and FigJam using the fields. Choose from:
- Viewer: Viewers can upgrade themselves to a paid seat by taking an upgrade action.
- Viewer-restricted: Only an admin can upgrade them to a paid seat.
- Full: They join with a paid seat on that product. New paid seats are included in your quarterly true-up.
- Select Save to apply your changes.
Tip! When you change the default seat type for a team, it will only apply to new team or organization members going forward.
If someone has already been invited to a team file as a Viewer, but has yet to edit the file, they can still upgrade themselves to a full seat by editing the file. To prevent this, make sure to review current seats across Figma Design and FigJam and downgrade members as needed ↑
Review new editors on a monthly cadence
We recommend reviewing any new editors before your next invoice date. This makes sure you’re only getting charged for the people who need full seats.
Figma will bill you on the same date each month. You can view the date of your next invoice in your account:
- Open the file browser by logging in to your account at figma.com. If you’re in a file, you can access the file browser from > Back to files in the toolbar.
- Select Admin from the sidebar.
- Click the Billing tab.
- In the callout at the top of the page you’ll see Your next invoice will be issued…
You can also set alerts to get notified when someone is upgraded to a paid seat →
I am being charged monthly on an annual subscription
What happened?
Your annual subscription covers the number of full Figma Design, Dev Mode, and FigJam seats you had when you first upgraded your team.
If you add more full seats to your team (either Figma Design, FigJam, or Dev Mode seats), Figma will charge you for those seats on a separate monthly subscription. We refer to this as "co-terming”. This gives you the flexibility to manage seats on multiple billing cadences.
How to fix it
If new users only need access to paid features for a short period of time, you can keep managing their billing on a monthly cadence. You can then downgrade or remove them when their access is no longer needed.
Downgrade or remove their access
- From the file browser, click Admin.
- Select the People tab.
- For any given member, you can change their Figma design, Dev Mode, or FigJam seat from Full to Viewer-restricted.
If you’d like those users to be a part of your annual subscription, you can simplify your billing by converting them to annual users.
Add new seats to your annual subscription
If you’d like those users to be a part of your annual subscription, you can simplify your billing by converting them to annual users. Figma will charge you a pro-rated fee for the remainder of the billing period.
- From the file browser, click Admin.
- On the Billing tab, review how many monthly seats you have across Figma's products.
- Go to the Settings tab and select Add additional seats.
- Add the number of Figma Design and FigJam seats you’d like to convert to annual billing. If you add more seats than you need, Figma will show you a label that says 1 unused Figma Design seat will be added or 1 unused FigJam seat will be added.
- Click Add annual seats.
