Verify education status
Who can use this feature
Supported on the Education plan.
Anyone with verified education status can create free Education teams.
Want to cultivate design thinking, break down barriers, and collaborate with others in the classroom? If you are a student or educator, then you may qualify for Figma's Education plan.
The Education plan allow you to access all the features of the Professional plan for Figma design and FigJam, without the cost. This allows students and educators in any structured learning environment to collaborate.

To qualify for the Education plan you must be:
✅ At least 13 years of age
✅ A student or educator in a classroom
What qualifies as a classroom
Students and educators in online or in-person classes and educational programs are eligible for the Education plan. Some examples are:
- High schools, universities, post-graduate institutions, trade schools, polytechnics, or colleges
- Online courses, bootcamps, or workshops
- Design and coding academies
What doesn't qualify as a classroom
The Education plan is not for:
- Self-directed education
- Early stage startups
- "Not-for-profit" or "non-profit" organizations whose primary purpose is not educational
- Educational programs affiliated with organizations whose primary purpose is not educational
Apply for education status
Your education status will be valid for two years. If you are still a student or educator at the end of the two years, you can reapply for education status. Figma may decline or revoke your education status under certain circumstances. Learn more below ↓

Create a Figma account
You'll need to have an existing Figma account before you can apply for education status. If you have a school-issued email address, we recommend signing up for Figma with this address.
As part of the sign up process, Figma will ask you for your:
- Name: This will become your display name in Figma. You can update your name and avatar in your account settings.
- What kind of work you do: What your role is within the design process.
- How will you primarily be using Figma: Make sure to select For teaching or taking a class.

Verify education status
To verify your education status, Figma needs to know the details of your education program or learning environment. You need to verify your education status to create a new team, or upgrade an existing team.
If you're new to Figma and join a team on the Education plan, you'll have seven days to verify your education status. After those seven days, you'll need to verify your education status to access files and projects in that team.
To verify your education status:
- Log in to Figma under the account you want to verify. If you have a school-issued email address, we recommend using this address.
- Follow the link: https://www.figma.com/education/apply
If you've joined an existing team and need to verify your status, you can also open this page via the banners in Figma — click Verify status to start the process.
- Select Student or Educator.
- Enter the reason you're applying for the free Figma Education plan.
- Search for your school in the What's your school's name menu. If your school isn't listed, select School not listed to enter details of your school:
- The full name of the school. For example:
Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)
- The school's website (URL). For example:
https://www.risd.edu/
- The full name of the school. For example:
- Select your primary field of study.
- Click the Submit button to complete the application process.

Create, upgrade, or join a team
Teams under the Education plan have all of the same features and benefits as teams with the Professional plan. You can create as many teams as you want on the Education plan.
We recommend creating new teams from scratch, but you can also upgrade any of your existing teams.
Education application denied or revoked
Figma checks applications to confirm eligibility for a free Education account. Figma may decline or revoke your education status if:
- You signed up with an email associated with a company or professional organization
- Figma could not find a public record of your school or classroom via the URL you provided
- Your documents are not associated with a school or classroom
- Your documentation does not match other documentation we have seen from this institution
- You abuse the free education status
- You intentionally misrepresent yourself or an organization
If Figma declines your application or revokes your education status, you can reach out to the Figma Support team.
Send an email to support@figma.com with some extra information about your course or program. This can include any of the following:
- An updated URL of the institution you're enrolled with
- A copy of your school-issued identification card
- Transcript, receipt, or proof of enrollment
Create new teams
Once your Education status is verified, you can upgrade to the Education plan. Teams under the Education plan have all of the same features and benefits as teams with the Professional plan.
You can create as many teams as you want on the Education plan. We recommend creating new teams from scratch, but you can also upgrade any of your existing teams.
Everyone with can edit access to the team must verify their education status before they can contribute. It's not possible to have a mix of paid members on the Professional plan and free members on the Education plan.

Open Figma in the file browser and click Create new team in the sidebar. Or follow the link: https://www.figma.com/files/create-team

Give your team a name and click Create team. You can always change this after the team is created.

On the Add team members step, you can invite students, educators and other collaborators to your team.
- Enter email addresses in the fields provided, one email per field. Click Add another to add more fields for collaborators.
- Click Skip for now to invite collaborators after you create your team.

Click Continue to move to the next step and select your plan.

Select Choose Education plan.

Figma will show you how many Figma design and FigJam editors you have. As the Education plan is free for students and educators, the totals will be
$0.00
. Click Complete upgrade to complete the process and open your new team.
Invite others to your team
You can invite students, educators, and other collaborators to your team at any time.
New team members have seven days to verify their email address and education status. This makes it easier for newcomers to start participating and also allows you to add temporary guests or speakers.
After seven days, Figma will restrict their access to the team. To get access to those files or projects again, they can verify their education status ↑
Invite by email
If you know a person's email address, you can add them to the team via an invitation. Figma will send an invitation email to their address with a button to accept the invite.
If they already have a Figma account, they will also receive an in app notification for the invitation, which they can accept the invitation to join the team.
If they don't have an account, they can sign up for a Figma account as part of the acceptance process.
- Open the team page in the file browser.
- Select the Members tab and click Invite in the top-right corner.
- Enter email addresses in the invite someone field, separated by a comma.
- Click to adjust their permissions.
- Select Can view to give them view-only access to the team. They'll only be able to view and comment on files and prototypes.
- Select can edit to give them edit access to the team. This will allow them to edit any Figma design or Figjam files in the team.
- Click Send invite to send email invitations. If they're already using Figma, they'll get an in app notification as well.
Share team link
Team invite links let team members invite other collaborators to your team via a dedicated link. Like team invites, you can invite collaborators with can view
and can edit
permissions.
- Open the team page in the file browser.
- Select the Members tab and click Invite in the top-right corner.
- Click to select which permission you want for the link. You can set an invite link to
can view
orcan edit
permissions. - Click Copy link to add the link to your clipboard.
- Paste or send the link to anyone you want to join the team.
Figma will add anyone who clicks that link to the team. Team admins can reset invite links or turn them off to expire existing links which haven't been redeemed. Invite team members →
Upgrade existing team
The Education plan is a free Professional plan. When you upgrade an existing team, you'll need to upgrade to the Professional plan then let Figma know you qualify for the Education plan.
Note: Everyone with can edit access to the team must verify their education status before they can contribute. This includes any current team members when upgrading a an existing team. New team members have seven days to verify their email address and education status.
- Select the team in the left sidebar and click the Settings tab.
- In the Plan and billing section, select Upgrade your plan:
- Select Upgrade to Professional from the plan options:
- In the summary on the right, select Yes for the Is this an Education team? option:
- Figma will show you how many Figma design and FigJam editors you have. Click Next: Review to move to the next step.
- Figma will show you how many Figma design and FigJam editors are included in your billing. As the Education plan is free for students and educators, the total will be

. Click Complete upgrade. - Figma will upgrade the team to an Education team.
