In Figma, there are two types of plugins:
- Classic plugins, where your development environment is hosted locally on your computer
- Generative plugins, where you build via prompting the Figma agent in design files
In this article, we’ll cover how to publish and manage both classic and generative plugins to your organization. Learn more about the difference between classic plugins and generative plugins.
Publish internal plugins
When publishing a plugin, you can use the Publish to setting to choose whether to publish the plugin to the organization or the Community. Internal plugins don't need to go through the review process before they are available to use.
To create a internal plugin for an organization, follow the steps to publish classic plugins to the Figma Community and set Publish to to your organization.
Note: Only the plugin's original publisher can change the plugin's access. They can update this setting by publishing an update to the plugin. Update the Publish to setting to change who can access the plugin. If you're changing a plugin from private to public, it will need to go through Figma's plugin and widget review process.
Publish internal generative plugins
To publish an internal generative plugin to your organization:
- Open the file where your plugin lives.
- Navigate to the Tools tab in the navigation bar on the left and locate your generative plugin.
- You can narrow your search by using the Source filter and selecting Created by you.
- Next to the plugin, click and select Publish.
- From the modal, select Publish internally.
- In the Describe your tool section:
- Set an icon for your plugin (Recommended size 128 x 128 px)
- Enter a name for your generative plugin
- Provide a description that describes what your generative plugin does and the features it provides
- Click Publish to share your generative plugin to your organization.
Internal plugins don't need to go through the review process before they are available to use.
Publish a new release
If you've updated your generated plugin and are ready to release the new version, you can publish an update. Doing this will update the plugin for every user in your organization. Users who have already installed your plugin will only have access to the latest version of your plugin.
It's not possible for users to revert to a previous version of the plugin. If you need to roll back any changes, you can republish an earlier version of the plugin.
- Open the file where the plugin lives.
- Navigate to the Tools tab in the navigation bar on the left and locate your plugin.
- You can narrow your search by using the Source filter and selecting Created by you.
- Next to the plugin, click > Publish > Publish changes.
- Use the Publish plugin modal to update plugin information as needed.
- Click Publish to complete the process. Figma will update the plugin for everyone that has it installed.
View internal plugins
You can find and use plugins that are private to your organization in the following environments:
- From a design file in your organization: Navigate to the Tools tab in the navigation bar on the left. Open the Source dropdown and filter by From <your organization>.
- From your file browser: click Resources and select the Plugins pill.
