Before you start
Who can use this feature
Professional, Education, Organization, and Enterprise plans
Standalone Spec files, Figma Design, and FigJam
Requires edit access to the file
Specs is a native home for context that can move into, out of, and across Figma. You can create a Spec file, or insert a new Spec directly onto the Figma Design canvas or FigJam boards to use alongside your designs and code to capture and codify decisions.
- Add Specs to the canvas in Figma Design, next to your designs, so collaborators and agents have the context they need
- Draft a Spec by bringing in outside context via MCP, like your codebase or relevant data analytics
- Create a technical specification doc from your designs or turn technical specifications into code layers
- Riff on multiple Specs side-by-side on the canvas with your team to align on a direction
- Summarize team critiques in FigJam into a Spec
Create a Spec file
To create a new Spec file, navigate to the file browser and click Spec at the top.
You can also type figma.com/spec/new in your browser to create a new Spec file.
Insert a Spec into a file
A Spec can be created in Figma Design files and FigJam boards.
- From a Figma Design file or FigJam board, click Spec from the toolbar, or press D on your keyboard.
- (FigJam only) Select objects on your board and click Summarize AI to create a Spec based on the selected contents
- Prompt the agent to create a Spec—such as a brief based on frames and designs, a design critique agenda based on selected frames, or on-canvas design systems documentation.
Create content in a Spec
Use a forward slash / to bring up a list of blocks you can add to your Spec. Some blocks can also be created using Markdown shorthand.
| Block type | Markdown shorthand |
|---|---|
| Heading 1 | # |
| Heading 2 | ## |
| Heading 3 | ### |
| Image | No markdown shorthand |
| Figma file embed | No markdown shorthand |
| Bullet list | * or - |
| Numbered list | 1. |
| To-do | [] |
| Quote | > |
| Code block | ``` |
| Divider | No markdown shorthand |
If you change your mind about a block and want to turn it into something different, click the handle > Turn into, then select the block type you want.
Tip: While you're working on a Spec within a Figma Design file or FigJam board, you can:
- Drag contents between the Spec and the canvas or board.
- Click View as scrollable page in the top-right corner of the Spec
- Click Open full-screen editor in the top-right corner to view the Spec in fullscreen
Collaborate
Collaborate with your team in a Spec by sharing, leaving comments, or spotlighting yourself during a presentation
Use Specs with other tools
Coding agents connected to the Figma MCP server can work with Specs using the figma-spec skill. Your agent can read, create, and update standalone Spec files and Specs embedded in Figma Design files and FigJam boards. Its edits are targeted, and comments stay attached to the right text. Learn more about Figma skills for MCP.
You can also use other tools to:
- Bring in context to draft a spec: Pull in context via MCP, like drafting a technical spec with the GitHub connector, or pulling relevant data from HEX into your PRD
- Push context back: Push context to external source, like updating Linear issues or your GitHub repo, based on a spec
- Use the agent with Spec: Turn on-canvas exploration into something your coding agent can easily ready/write to. Turn a PRD into designs and code, or turn designs and code into a technical spec.
Frequently asked questions
When will I get access to Figma Specs?
Specs is in open beta and is rolling out over the next few weeks. You may gain access to this feature at a different time than your team or organization. If you don’t see Specs in your account yet, please stay tuned.
Once the feature is available in your account, you’ll see the ability to create a Spec file from the file browser, as well as a Spec icon in your toolbar in Figma Design and FigJam.
Does using Specs consume AI credits?
Yes, using the agent with Specs consumes Figma AI credits.
Credit consumption varies based on a variety of factors, including task complexity and context the agent consumes. You can hover over the receipt after each prompt in the agent to see how many credits were consumed by each prompt.
Learn more about AI credit consumption.
Note: The agent in FigJam is currently in closed beta. If you are a part of that closed beta, using the agent to create a Spec in FigJam does not consume credits at this time.
Can I write and edit specs without using the agent?
Yes, writing and editing content directly in the Spec does not use the agent and will not cost AI credits.
