Frequently asked questions
Do I have access to custom shaders?
Creating shaders via the Figma agent is gradually rolling out to users with a Full seat on a paid plan as an open beta on June 24, 2026. Using Figma’s first party agent-built shaders are rolling out to users with a Full seat on all plans in open beta.
Creating shaders via the Figma agent is not available for Education, Government, or Starter plans.
Do I need to know how to code to create shaders?
No. Shaders can be prompted through chatting with the Figma design agent. You describe what you want and the design agent generates the shader for you.
Do shaders consume AI credits?
As of now, shaders do not consume AI credits. Once the Figma agent becomes generally available, standard AI credit usage will apply to build shaders with the agent. It does not consume AI credits to apply shaders.
Can I use shader effects in other Figma products?
Yes. Shader effects support export to Figma Make and other platforms via MCP.
- PNG will always work for a fixed frame
- MP4 export will work in Motion with Shaders
- MCP (crude/raw) code export will be supported
- This means that devs will have access to the JS/WGSL

Frequently asked questions
When will I have access to generative plugins?
The ability to create generative plugins are rolling out gradually on June 24, 2026. If you don't see one of the new features in your account yet, check back soon!
Can I still build plugins without the agent?
Yes — the agent introduces an additional path to building plugins. Classic plugins aren’t going anywhere and we’re continuing to invest in resources for developer plugins. Additionally, we’re investing more in new plugin APIs and new plugin UI; these investments will be available to both generative plugins and classic plugins.
Who can access the plugins I build with the agent? Can I publish one to the Community?
At launch, generative plugins live in your file and are accessible to anyone with access to that file. The plugins you create are also available across all your own design files. We plan to bring public publishing to Community and private publishing to your organization in the coming months.
Where do generative plugins run? Who hosts them?
Generative plugins are hosted by Figma. They are written and run right inside your Figma file. Classic plugins are built on your local machine using the Figma desktop app and a development environment like Visual Studio Code or Cursor, and then published to the Figma Community where other Figma users can discover and run them.
Do generative consume AI credits?
As of now, generative do not consume AI credits. Once the Figma agent becomes generally available, standard AI credit usage will apply to build plugins with the agent. It does not consume AI credits to run an generative plugin.
