You can prevent members from using their work email address to create Starter or Professional plans outside your organization. Use this control to limit the creation of unmanaged teams while keeping external collaboration available.
Note: To manage who can create teams inside your organization, use the separate team creation setting.
How external plan restrictions work
By default, members can create Starter and Professional plans outside your organization.
When you disable external plan creation:
- Members can’t create new Starter or Professional plans using their work email address.
- The restriction applies to every member, including admins, regardless of their seat type.
- Guests aren’t affected.
When you disable external plan creation, any external teams and plans that have already been created aren’t affected. Members can continue to access and collaborate in them according to their existing permissions. The restriction also doesn’t prevent upgrades to existing plans.
If someone belongs to multiple organizations, they can’t create a new Starter or Professional plan if any of those organizations restricts external plan creation. An admin in another organization can’t override that restriction.
Verify your organization’s domains
Before you can restrict external plan creation, you must verify every domain associated with your organization.
Follow the steps in Manage domain capture for an organization to add and verify your organization’s domains. You don’t need to enable domain capture to restrict external plan creation—you just need to add and verify the domains.
Disable external plan creation
Once you’ve verified your organization’s domains, you can disable external plan creation:
- From the file browser, click Admin.
- Select Settings.
- Under External access, click External plan creation.
- Turn off the toggle that allows members to use their work email address to create Starter or Professional plans outside your organization.
- Click Save.
Once disabled, members can no longer create new Starter or Professional plans with their work email address.
You can review changes to this setting in your organization’s activity logs.
Troubleshooting
If you can’t change this setting, it may be because of one of the following reasons:
- Your domains aren’t verified. You can’t disable external plan creation until every organization domain is technically verified. Go to Settings → Login and provisioning → Manage domains to check their status and complete verification.
- Access to external content is disabled. If your organization already restricts access to external content, external plan creation is also blocked. You can’t enable the external plan creation setting independently while that broader restriction is in place.
