Request upgrades in an organization
Before you start
Who can use this feature
Anyone on the Figma Organization plan
Only Organization Admins can change a member's role in the Organization.
Everyone who interacts with an organization will also have an account type and a role. Only Organization Admins can manage these permissions.
In this article, we are focusing on upgrading roles in an organization. Learn more about permissions in an organization →
Roles in a Figma Organization
A person's role determines:
- If they can get edit access to teams, projects, or files
- If they're included in the Organization's billing
There are three roles:
- Viewer is a provisional role that removes barriers to collaboration. Viewers can view and comment on resources in the organization. Viewers can also upgrade themselves when they perform any of the upgrade actions.
- Viewer Restricted is a role that can only perform limited actions within an Organization. They can't upgrade themselves, so they will need an Organization Admin to upgrade their access.
- Editor is a role for members with can edit access to at least one team, project or file. They can't edit all resources in the organization, just the ones they have edit access to. Figma only includes Editors in the organization's billing.
There are a few ways members and guests can be assigned roles:
- If you upgrade to Figma Organization from a Professional team, anyone with an existing Editor role on any teams or files will be made an Editor in the organization.
- When you add people to your organization, via domain capture or manual invitation, Figma will give them a provisional Viewer role. Organization Admins can update a member's role after adding them to the organization.
- If you use SAML SSO with Figma, you can provision user roles and cost centers using SCIM. Learn more about SAML SSO and SCIM →
Note: You can have any combination of account type and role in an organization. That includes Guests who are Editors, or Organization Admins with Viewer Restricted access.
Upgrade member or guest roles
Organization Admins can upgrade a member's role to Editor, or downgrade them to Viewer Restricted in the organization's Admin Settings. Learn more about managing members as an Organization Admin →
Tip! Figma allows Organization Admins to view and manage new Editors via quarterly true-ups. Admins can restrict a member's access to remove them from the Organization's billing. Learn how to manage billing in an organization →
Upgrade from Viewer
Viewer is a provisional role, which mean Figma doesn't place any restrictions on upgrading. Anyone with a Viewer role can upgrade to an Editor role by performing any of the following actions:
- Share a file from their Drafts with another member of the Organization. This needs to be from their Drafts in the Organization space.
- Click the Edit file button when they open an edit link for a file.
- Create a new team or new project in the organization space.
- Request to join a closed team as an Editor. A team Admin will need to accept their request.
- Join a team that doesn't have any existing Editors.
Other Editors in a team can also upgrade Viewers by inviting them to teams or files as Editors. This also applies when updating a collaborator's permissions from Can view to Can edit.
Upgrade from Viewer Restricted
Note: Organization Admins are the only ones who can upgrade anyone with a Viewer Restricted role to an Editor.
Figma will give anyone with a Viewer Restricted role the opportunity to request an upgrade, if they attempt the following actions:
- Share a file from their Drafts with another member of the organization. This needs to be from their Drafts in the Organization space.
- Click the Edit file button when they open an edit link for a file.
- Create a new team or new project in the organization space.
- Request to join a closed team as an Editor. A team Admin will need to accept their request.
- Join a team that doesn't have any existing Editors.
An Organization Admin will need to approve their request before they can gain edit access.
Request an upgrade
If you have a Viewer Restricted role, you can request to upgrade to an Editor role. You can submit an upgrade request via your account settings, or from a restricted access message.
View your role and account type
View your role and account type in your account Settings.
Note: Upgrading your organization permissions won't give you edit access to every team or resource in the organization, just the resources you currently have or will have can edit access to.
- Open Figma in the file browser.
- Click on your name in your global settings to open your account.
- Select the Settings tab and scroll down to the Organizations section.
- View the name of the organization, your role, and your account type.
- Click the Request Upgrade link next to your role.
Request upgrade
From the Request upgrade modal:
- Use the checkboxes to choose which admin(s) you'd like to send your requests to.
- Add a message to explain why you are requesting the upgrade.
- Click the Request upgrade button.
- Figma will send an email to the admin(s) you selected.
- Figma will notify you of the admin's response via in-app notification. If an admin accepts your request, you'll be upgraded to an Editor. If they deny your request, your role won't change.
Contact Organization Admins If you don't agree with an Admin's decision, we recommend reaching out to your manager or an Organization Admin.
Figma will include the email address of the Admin who declined your request in the notification. You can use this to reach out to them directly via email.
You can also find other Admins in your organization from your organization page in the file browser. Figma will list Admins on the right side of the page.
