Make a seat request
Who can use this feature
Available on all paid plans
Figma has multiple products: Figma Design, Dev Mode, FigJam, and Figma Slides.
Team or organization admins assign a seat to each user. The seat type determines which products a user has full access to. For example, if you have a Collab seat, you have full access to FigJam and Figma Slides, with view and comment access in Figma Design.

Your team or organization's seat approval settings control how users interact with different Figma products.
- Automatic seat approvals: If your admin has set up automatic seat approvals, you'll gain access to a new seat when you take an action that requires a seat upgrade.
- Manual seat approvals: If your admin uses manual seat approvals, you'll need to request a seat upgrade before taking actions that are not available in your current seat.
This article reviews how to make a seat request when your team or organization requires manual seat approvals.
Request a seat
There are several ways to make a seat request. Here are a few of the most common ways to make a request:
You can make an seat request when you attempt to create a new file for a product you do not have full access to.
- Open the file browser by logging in to your account at figma.com.
- If you’re in a specific Figma file, you can access the file browser by clicking the Figma menu > Back to files from the left sidebar toolbar.
- Click Create new.
- From the dropdown, select a file type for a product you do not have access to.
- In the popup modal, add an optional note with your request, and click Send request.
You can make a seat request by requesting to edit a file for a product you do not have full access to.
- Open a file.
- If you only have view and comment access, you will see a banner above the toolbar.
- Click Start editing.
- In the popup modal, add an optional note with your request, and click Send request.
You can make an access request when you attempt to share a draft of a file for a product you don’t have full access to.
- Open a file.
- Click the Share button.
- In the popup modal, add an optional note with your request, and click Send request.
Note: Requesting full product access via a seat request won't give you edit access to every file in a team or organization. You can only edit files where you have can edit
access. If you don't have edit access to the file, Figma sends a request to edit to the file owner after your seat upgrade has been approved.
What happens after I make a request?
After making a request, you’ll get 3 days of temporary access while you wait for your admin to review your request. During that time, you can create new files and edit any files where your teammates have given you edit access. The temporary access ends immediately if your request is denied or expires.
How do I know if my request was approved or denied?
You’ll get an email notification once your request is approved or denied. You’ll also get a notification in the file browser:
- Open the file browser by logging in to your account at figma.com.
- If you’re in a specific Figma file, you can access the file browser by clicking the Figma menu > Back to files from the left sidebar toolbar.
- Click Notifications.
You can re-request access at any time. If you don't agree with an admin's decision, we recommend reaching out to your manager or an admin. The email address of the admin who declined your request is included in the notification.
