Only organization admins can create workspaces and assign workspace admins.
Workspace admins manage teams and people for their workspaces. They can claim unassigned teams and people for their workspace.
Workspaces are groups of teams, people, and resources within an organization. They add another layer of structure within organizations.
You can create workspaces for different groups, departments, product areas, or business units. There are no standards around what a workspace should look like. The only rule is that every workspace must have a unique name.
You can assign dedicated admins to a workspace. Workspace admins have a level of access below an organization admin. They can only manage roles and licenses for people in their workspaces. Admins in Figma →
What makes a good workspace admin? Workspace admins can manage members and guests in their workspaces. This includes updating their Figma and FigJam roles, and removing people from the organization.
We recommend selecting people who understand the activities and tasks required of the people and teams they manage. This could be a team or line manager, department head, or anyone with insight into what teams people contribute to, and who needs to be able to edit files.
Create a workspace
To create a workspace:
- Open the organization in Figma.
- Select Admin settings in the left sidebar.
- Select Workspaces in the menu bar.
- Click New workspace at the top of the table:
-
Enter a Workspace name.
- In the Workspace admin(s) field, add at least one workspace admin. Start typing an existing members name, then click or press Enter to select. Add or remove workspace admins →
- Click Create workspace to complete the process.
Assign teams
You can group or structure related teams by assigning them to workspaces. Organization admins can assign teams to any workspace.
Workspace admins can only move unassigned teams to workspaces they manage. They can’t claim or reassign teams from other workspaces.
Assign teams to workspaces →
Workspace admins can assign default teams in a workspace. Default teams can be teams in the current workspace, as well as organization teams in other workspaces.
Figma adds everyone in the workspace to the current default teams. This applies to existing members or guests, or anyone new who joins the workspace.
Set default teams →
Assign members and guests
You can only assign a team or person to one workspace. When you assign someone to a workspace, Figma adds them to all default teams in that workspace. Members can still join teams, and browse and access resources in other workspaces.
Organization admins can assign members and guests to workspace. Or they can allow members to select their own workspace.
Manually assign members and guests
You can make changes to workspace assignments at any time. This includes assigning, reassigning or managing transfers between teams or departments.
Anyone who isn't assigned to a workspace is considered Unassigned. Both organization and workspace admins can view unassigned members.
Organization admins can assign people to any workspace. Workspace admins can only assign people from unassigned to workspaces they manage. They can’t claim or assign people from other workspaces.

Enable workspace selector
Enable the workspace selector to allow unassigned members to select their own workspace. This applies to existing members and anyone who joins the organization in the future.
Once enabled, Figma will prompt members to select a workspace on their next log in or the next time they open the file browser. Figma will assign them to the workspace they select.
If they don't see a relevant workspace, they can select My workspace isn't listed or I don't know my workspace. Figma will keep them in unassigned so an organization or workspace admin can assign them manually.
To enable the workspace selector:
- Open the organization in Figma.
- Select Admin settings in the sidebar.
- Select Settings in the menu bar.
- In the Login and provisioning section, toggle Workspace selector to on
Note: Guests can't select their workspace, but organization and workspace admins can add guests to workspaces. You can find any existing guests in Unassigned. Figma assigns new guests to the same workspace as the person who invited them.
