Transfer ownership of files or projects
Before you start
Who can use this feature
You can only create projects in teams. You can transfer project ownership on any plan.
Only the current owner of the project can transfer ownership
Note: It's not possible to undo these actions. The new owner will need to assign ownership back to you if you change your mind.
Transfer files
When you create a file, Figma will make you the owner of that file.
You can transfer ownership of the file to another collaborator. This could be someone on your team, or an external collaborator, if you're working in your drafts.
When you transfer ownership of a file, Figma will not:
- Move the file to a different location. This applies to files created in your drafts folder.
- Adjust your access permissions on the current file, or prevent you from viewing the file.
Drafts
Warning: When you delete your Figma account, Figma will also delete any files in your drafts, regardless of the file owner.
If you are planning on deleting your Figma account, we recommend moving any files in your drafts to a team project. You can then transfer ownership of that team or project to another Figma user.
Alternatively, you can export files in your drafts as .fig files. This will allow you to open those files in Figma at a later date. Exported .fig files don't include any permissions, comments, or version history from the original file.
If you have a file in your drafts, you can transfer ownership of that file to another collaborator. This will only transfer who the owner is. If you want to move the file, you need to do that separately.
- Open the share modal for the file.
- File browser: Right-click on the file and select Share.
- Editor: Click the Share button in the toolbar.
- Click their current permissions and select Owner from the options.
- Click the Transfer ownership button to confirm the transfer.
Team files
Note: You can also transfer ownership of an entire team. Learn how to change the owner of a team →
The share modal will show you who is currently a collaborator on the file. You can then transfer ownership to another collaborator on the file. If they aren't on the file, you will need to Invite the collaborator to the file.
- Open the share modal for that file
- File Browser: Right-click on the file and select Share from the options.
- Editor: Click the Share button in the toolbar.
- Click their current permissions and select Owner.
- Click Transfer ownership to confirm the transfer. You can't undo this action.
Transfer projects
When you create a project, you will be the Owner of that project.
You can choose to transfer ownership of the Project to another collaborator on your team. This will transfer the ownership of the project, and any files within it, to the new owner.
This is perfect if you are leaving a team or project, or want to put someone else in charge.
- Only the current owner can transfer ownership of a project.
- Owners can only transfer ownership to someone who is an existing collaborator on that project.
Caution: This doesn't apply to any files you have in your drafts. If you have files in your drafts that you want to transfer, you will need to transfer ownership of those files individually.
You could also choose to move those files to a team, or export and reimport them into another Figma account.
Transfer ownership of a project
- Open the project in the file browser.
- Click Share at the top of the page to open the share modal.
- Click their existing permissions and select Owner.
- Click Transfer ownership to confirm. You can't undo this action.
Figma will transfer ownership of the project, and any files, to the new owner. Figma won't change the project's location or adjust your permissions on the project.
