Team owner roles are available on the Organization and Enterprise plans
Starter and Professional plans are managed by admins
Transfer ownership of Organization and Enterprise teams
The Organization and Enterprise plans can consist of multiple teams. The person who originally created a team is listed as the team owner. If you are leaving the team, or want to hand that responsibility to someone else, you can transfer ownership of the team. Only the current owner of a team can transfer ownership to another team member.
Team owners can transfer ownership to any existing team member, including a member with a free View seat or can view access to the team.
- From the file browser, navigate to the team where you'd like to transfer ownership.
- Without workspaces enabled, select All teams from the left sidebar, then select a team.
- With workspaces enabled, select All workspaces from the left sidebar, then select a team from the Your teams tab.
- On the team page, click the Share button.
- Click the relevant person's existing permissions dropdown and change it to Owner.
- Figma will ask you to confirm. It's not possible to undo this action, but the new owner can transfer ownership again. Click Transfer ownership to confirm.
Figma won't remove you from the team when you transfer ownership. You will stay on the team as a team admin. If you'd like, you can leave the team, or another admin can remove you.
Managing admins on Starter and Professional teams
On Starter and Professional plans, there's no separate owner role. Team members are assigned as admin, editor, or viewer, and any admin can manage team settings, members, and billing.
A team must always have at least one admin.
If you're the only admin and want to leave the team, you must promote another member to admin from the members panel first.
- From the file browser, select All folders from the left sidebar.
- On the team page, click the down arrow next to the team name and select View members.
- Click the relevant person's existing permissions dropdown and select Grant admin access.
On the Professional plan, it won't update the billing details for the team's subscription. If you also pay for the subscription, you will need to update the billing details for your team before you transfer ownership.
If the original team owner has left the company, there are a couple of ways you can update ownership:
-
Option 1: Recover the original owner’s account
- If your IT team can forward emails from the original owner’s email address, you may be able to reset their password and log in. Once signed in, you can transfer ownership to your own account or another team member, and then leave the team.
-
Option 2: Create a new team
- If no one has access to the original owner’s account, an admin on the team can cancel the current subscription and allow it to expire.
- If there are no admins left, contact Figma support with the last 4 digits and expiration date of the credit card used, along with the date and amount of the most recent payment. Our team can remove the card on file to prevent renewals.
- After the subscription is canceled, you can create a new team, upgrade it to a paid plan, and move the original team’s folders into the new team.
