Who can use this feature
Available on Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans
Plan admins only
As an admin, you can change permissions on files, folders, and teams across your plan. You can use this to restore access when a file owner is unavailable, has left your plan, or when someone is locked out of work they need.
On any applicable file, folder, or team, admins can:
- Change someone's permission between can view and can edit
- Invite people or user groups to the resource
- Remove a user’s access to the resource
- Update audience access (who at your organization can find and open the resource)
Admins cannot:
- Transfer ownership of content. Only the current owner can transfer ownership of a file or folder.
- Remove or add new owners.
- Browse content in the file browser that they don't have access to. Files and folders won't appear in your file browser unless you were invited directly, or you can reach them through audience access. Giving yourself access to a file requires a direct link to that file.
Change permissions on a resource you can open
If you can already open a file, folder, or team, you can change its permissions from the share modal, even if you only have can view access.
- Open the file, folder, or team.
- Click Share to open the share modal.
- Adjust permissions or share settings the same way an editor would: invite people, change permissions, or update audience access.
Note: When you're using admin access to make a change you couldn't make otherwise, a banner at the top of the share modal says "You're modifying permissions as an admin." This includes when you have view access, no role on the resource, or can edit only through audience access.
Changes take effect right away, and everyone with access to that resource can see them.
Get access to a file you can't open
If you open a link to a file you don't have access to, you'll see the request access screen. As an admin, you can give yourself can edit access from this screen instead of waiting for someone to approve a request.
- Open the file link. The request access screen appears.
- Click Get admin access, then Get access now.
From there, you can change permissions on the file like any other editor.
Note: When you give yourself access this way, Figma emails the file owner to let them know. This is a notification only. It doesn't remove their access or change their role.
