Start an open session
Open sessions last for 24 hours at a time. You can always start a new open session for the same file to continue the open session beyond 24 hours.
You can also add password protection to open sessions. This means only people with the link and the correct password can join the open session.
- Click Share in the top toolbar to open the share modal.
- Confirm the link sharing settings for the file. You can create public links, password-protected links, and on organization plans, organization-wide links.
- In the Open session section, click Start.
- Click Copy link to add the file link to your clipboard. You can share the file link with anyone you want to join the session.
- People can join the file based on the file’s link sharing settings.
Open sessions are only available on paid plans. This includes accounts with Education status. If you don't see the option to start an open session in the share modal, it usually means the file is still in your drafts. To start an open session in that file, you'll need to move it into a team space. Move a file →
Join an open session
When you're invited to join an open session as a visitor, you'll have access to interact with the board and make edits.
To join as a visitor:
- Click the invite link shared with you by the file's owner.
- Enter your name or a fun alias. If you want to join the file using a Figma account, click Log in to sign in or create a new account.
At this point, you can edit and interact with the file.
If you need to access the file once an open session has ended, the file owner will need to start a new open session or invite you to the file, which requires creating a Figma account.

End an open session
Open sessions expire on their own after 24 hours, but you can end it any time before the period has passed.
- Click Share in the top toolbar to open the share modal.
- Click End now in the open session section.
- Confirm you want to end the open session.
Once an open session has ended, the file will be locked to people outside your team or not previously invited to the file.
Anyone with view access can continue to view the file and copy its contents, but they won’t be able to edit the file any longer.
Billing
Inviting visitors to an open session does not affect team billing, as a visitor is a temporary user on the file with limited permissions. During the open session, anyone with a link to the file will temporarily be able to edit the board even if they don’t have a Figma account, however, you won’t be charged for these users in an open session.
If you decide to invite participants after the open session ends, your account bill will be affected and charged as usual depending on the seat type they are given.
