In Figma, you work in files, which can be organized into folders.

You can browse all your files and folders in the file browser.

Open the file browser by logging in to your account at figma.com. If you’re inside a Figma file, you can access the file browser by clicking the Figma menu > Back to files.

Note: Starting August 3, 2026, projects are being transitioned to folders, with the rollout reaching all users over the next few weeks. Your content and access will remain the same.

Folders

Folders let you group related files in one space, similar to folders in a file system. They can include files from any Figma product.

On the Professional, Organization, or Enterprise plan, you can create unlimited folders. You can also nest folders up to 10 levels deep. On the Starter plan, you can create one folder.

Organize files into folders in whatever way works best for you. Your company’s structure may influence how you use folders.

Folders FAQ

How can I view all of my folders?

View all your folders in the file browser.

Open the file browser by logging in to your account at figma.com. If you’re in a specific Figma file, you can access the file browser by clicking the Figma menu > Back to files.

You can browse your content from the left sidebar.

Starter and Professional: Go to All folders
Organization and Enterprise: Use All teams or All workspaces (if enabled). Select a specific workspace and/or team to see a list of folders.

How do I invite someone to a folder?

Files

Figma supports multiple file types, including Design files, FigJam boards, Slide decks, and more. Each file type has its own set of tools and features tailored to different workflows.

Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans can create unlimited files and drafts
Starter plans can create:
- 3 total Figma Design and Figma Sites files in a folder
- 3 files in a folder for each other Figma product (i.e., 3 Figma Slides files, 3 FigJam files, etc.)
- Unlimited drafts

How does Figma load design files?

Figma dynamically loads only the page you land on—often the first page. This makes even large files load quickly.

Pages load individually as you navigate

Certain actions may cause the file to load all pages. For example:

Searching across all pages in a file.
Selecting All pages when you review updates to components, styles, and variables.
Running a plugin or widget that needs the whole file. While plugins are usually optimized to dynamically load pages, some plugins need to load all pages in order to run.

For a very large or complex file, it can take a few moments for Figma to load all the pages.

What are the save file formats for each Figma product?

Each Figma product uses its own file format, which can only be opened in Figma.

You can save a copy of a file to your computer in the following file formats:

Figma Design: .fig
FigJam: .jam
Figma Slides: .deck
Figma Buzz: .buzz
Figma Sites: .site
Figma Make: .make

Saving local file copies is useful if you want to back up your files if you go offline unexpectedly, or if you want to move files between Figma accounts.

What is the structure of a file URL?

Every Figma file has a unique URL. The URL includes several components that tell you information about the file.

Consider the following URL:

https://www.figma.com/design/abttA1F3GxZdZlkI9t5s99/Example-Figma-file?node-id=32-9

design indicates that the file is a Figma Design file. Other options include:
- proto for Figma Design prototypes
- board for FigJam files
- slides for Figma Slides files
- deck for Figma Slides files in presentation view
- site for Figma Sites files
- buzz for Figma Buzz files
- make for Figma Make files
abttA1F3GxZdZlkI9t5s99 is the unique file key. Knowing how to find your file key is useful if you’re embedding files in an app or using the Figma REST API.
Example-Figma-file is the name of the file.
32-9 is the unique ID of a selected layer in the file. When you use a URL that includes the node ID of a layer, the file opens focused on that layer.

Note: The file name doesn't impact the functionality of the URL. If the file name changes— if "Example Figma file" changes to "Old Figma file" for example—previous versions of the URL that include the old name continue to work.

What are drafts?

Drafts are a personal space for creating and experimenting with Figma files before sharing them with a team or moving them to a more permanent location like a team folder.

You can view your Draft files for each team from the left sidebar of the file browser.

Drafts are private to you, and only people that you specifically invite to your files will have access to any files in this space.

Drafts on the Starter plan do not support collaboration with other editors, although they can be shared with unlimited viewers.

When you’re ready to share a draft, you can move it to a folder.
